Matthew "Matt" McLauglin was born in Stockton,
California and resides in Oregon with his wife Nicole and his son Liam.
Matt began his musical studies at a young
age, under the tutelage of his father, Mr. Gary McLaughlin, learning the trumpet, and later the acoustic guitar, in addition
to Irish Tin Whitles. He furthered his musical training by studying under the guidance of Dr. Raphael Pazo, selecting
the Great Highland Bagpipes as his instrument of choice around 2004. His bagpiping education included all the fundamentals
required for band and invididual performance, mostly "Ceol Beagh" or "light music" such as Marches, Airs, Reels, Jigs, Hornpipes
and Strathspeys. Matt musical style is characterized by a natural talent to play one of the most musical instruments,
the quality of the "musical tone and hue" he produces, and the deliverate and precise manner in which he performes the "embellishments"
characteristic of playing the Scottish Bagpipes. His passion for this instrument began in 2004 and he has been playing
since.
In the year 2007, after successful graduation
from law enforcement academy, he joined the California Department of Corrections at San Quientin State Prison, then
at Dueuel Vocational Institution in Tracy, California, where he became the first Honor Guard Bagpiper at that institution.
He continues his carrer as a corrections officers at Pelican Bay Correctional Facility in Northern California.
Matt enjoys singing and playing Irish Folk
Songs on the guitar and Irish Penny Whistles, fitness exercising, traveling and being in the company of family and friends,
sharing quality time with them.
